Beattie went into labour on Friday evening, and due to her large size, needed a helping hand to get going. Therefore we put her in the car at 04:00, after sitting with her all night, and took her to the vets for an Oxytocin shot to stimulate her uterus to contract more strongly. The injection takes about 20 minutes to have an effect and we live 20 minutes from the Vet's premises, so it is always a race against time to get home before the contractions start! The injection had the desired effect and within a few minutes of arriving home, Beattie was having strong contractions. The first puppy took a long time to arrive, it was a big puppy and as it was the first one out, had to blaze a trail for the others to follow! The subsequent puppies arrived at regular intervals; the first was born at 05:00 hrs and the last at 07:10 hrs. We then returned to the Vet for another Oxytocin shot, as we knew that there was at least one more puppy in Beattie and she was exhausted by this time and needed the help of the Oxytocin to expel the puppy. Unfortunately this puppy, a bitch, was still-born and stood no chance of revival. This was very sad but happens once in a while. All the other puppies and Beattie are thriving. Click here for the 'U' Litter diary.

Huge thanks must go to Ann Trodd, good friend and trainer at Westhall Dog Training Club, for her help and encouragement, we couldn't have done it without you!!

Today was a sad day for us at Messano. Unfortunately, to save her any suffering, Maisie (Messano Eager Beaver) was put to sleep this afternoon. Maise had been unwell for a few days, but quickly deteriorated on Sunday afternoon. We therefore had to make another of those awful decisions that comes to everyone that decides to share their life with a dog.
Maisie was mother of Mopi, Sally and Roxy. Grandmother of Sunny and great-grandmother of the 'T' Litter puppies. She will be sadly missed but hopefully reunited with her own mother Briar, grand-mother Bracken and father Boysie.

Paul was also the 'official' club results recorder and photographer. His work can be seen here.
Julie also had a good day under the Mrs I. Holloway (Cattryse). Although we did not have any of our bitches at the show, Julie handled Jenny Bowden's Gillbryan Just Matilda (Tilly) into first place in Puppy Bitch. Jenny went on a surprise holiday and rather than miss the show, Julie offered to handle Tilly for Jenny. It's fortunate that she did! A photo of Tilly can be seen on the results page under 'Puppy Bitch'

We had a long awaited holiday this week in Barbati, Corfu. It was a nice relaxing week, with no dogs to look after, and we really enjoyed ourselves.
The hotel was very picturesque but was hard work as it is built into the side of a mountain. The hotel was described as being 300 metres from the beach, which it was, but in a vertical line down the hill. In reality it was nearer a mile in total distance walked!
Thanks to our daughter Emma for looking after the dogs for us. We really do appreciate our occasional break in the sun.

We have decided not to mate Beattie this season, as we would like to have a summer in the show ring with her. We therefore decided to mate Messano Mustang Sally instead. The male that we have choosen for her is Swedish Champion Floprym Rivaldo. Rivaldo is staying in the UK for a while with Susanna Zubair & the Thornywait Goldens. We decided to take advantage of his open pedigree to bring diversity into our bloodlines. If Sally is in whelp, the puppies should be due around 26th March and ready to go to their new homes at the end of May. If you are interested in a puppy from this mating, please contact Julie to discuss, as we already have a waiting list for this litter.
