This is a
pictorial diary of the Messano 'V' litter, Ritzilyn Rock On Tommy For Messano
(Tommy) x Messano Mustang Sally (Sally). The litter was born
on 09/12/2009 and consists of 4 bitches and 6 dogs (all puppies
have homes arranged for them).
Sally produced her first puppy at approximately 2.30 am on Wednesday morning, 2 days earlier than her estimated due date, but she had been progesterone tested before mating and this means that the eggs are queued-up waiting to be fertilized and it's not unusual to be earlier than calculated. The whelping was quite straight-forward and with the exception of a couple of stuck puppies that were eventually freed with manipulation, there was no drama. Sally produced the last puppy at approximately 11:00 am, so an average labour time.
...Sally's first-born (a male)..
Sally with six puppies born
All the puppies shown on the 2nd day; they are all colour marked so that we can keep a check on their weight and feeding.
The puppies are already very cute and have a healthy shine to their coats.
Day 2...the puppies are all happy and content and are putting on weight steadily.
In this photo you can see the range of colours. The two darker puppies are both bitches.
Sally is now into the routine of being a mum again.
A head study of one of the gold bitches.
....there are enough teats for one each. Isn't nature wonderful!
One week old today. The pigment on the nose, eye rims and feet is now darkening.
Sally is producing loads of milk and the puppies are all thriving.
Three general views of the puppies....
.....they don't really do much at this age...
...except for drinking milk and sleeping.
The puppies can move very fast when they sense Sally in the whelping box...
The puppies cannot hear yet and cannot see very well, but they have opened their eyes....
...some more than others!
These next 5 images were taken of the puppies sleeping on Christmas Eve at just over 2 weeks of age...
....you can see the very black foot pads, nose and eye rim pigment...
....this is very desirable in a Golden Retriever...
....in the Golden Retriever breed standard it states 'Nose, preferably black'.....
.... so although not essential, it is always a bonus if the puppies have very black noses.
The next 4 photos show the puppies walking around their box...
...the one at the back isn't really emerging from a trapdoor!...
...they are quite agile now and really move fast when Sally gets in the box...
...we will be removing the shelf and adding a board soon!...
